Language learning as key to tourism success

The Hanga Ahazaza (“Create the Future”) program is an extensive training initiative for people employed in Rwanda’s tourism and hospitality sectors. During the 12-month program, students use Hult EF Corporate Education’s English language platform, EF English Live, to improve their English proficiency and communication skills. Additionally, they acquire industry-specific knowledge through lessons covering language, communication, work-readiness, employment skills, and information specific to tourism.

English language skills have been in high demand since 2008 when Rwanda changed its national language from French to English as part of a strategic move to drive growth and international cooperation. Training young people in English language and communication skills is a cornerstone of the Rwandan government's strategy to reverse pandemic-related tourism industry losses. The country aims to increase tourism revenues to 800 million USD in 2024, up from pre-pandemic levels when travel and tourism employed 338,000 people in the country and contributed 400 million USD to Rwanda’s GDP.

“When I started the program, I also started training people in my community. I am now an English teacher thanks to the knowledge I received from the program.”

Obed Hakuzimana, program participant

Building confidence and communication skills

Since the start of this collaborative program in May 2020, 30,000 Rwandans have participated, and the program has already seen some very positive results. On average, learners improved their English proficiency by more than one full CEFR level, an international standard that assesses language ability.

Participants have also reported gains in confidence and communication skills at work (60+%), helping them take the next steps in growing their careers. A sizeable proportion have also received job promotions (37%) or new roles (56%). In addition, many reported getting involved in new areas of tourism, including animal conservation, coffee & tea tours, as well as hotel and restaurant management. Overall, a large majority of employers (88%) and learners (84%) feel the program improved their work performance.
